Upcoming Games

The beta test for Fallout 76 is going to start in October, just a month before release, and is open to all users who pre-ordered from “participating retailers”. It will be a server stress test beta and users will be gradually added over time. This has caused a bit of a fall out (ha!) with those that have pre-ordered who expected more immediate access to the beta. [link]

2K Sports and Visual Concepts are teaming up with Saber Interactive to publish NBA Playgrounds 2 which will now be called NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 (seems a little unnecessary). It is still scheduled to launch later this year on PC, Switch, Xbox One, and PS4. [link]

Nickelodeon and GameMill Entertainment have announced Nickelodeon Kart Racers which looks exactly as one imagines. The game pits characters from Nickelodeon history against each other on tracks from a lot of the same series, like Tommy’s house in Rugrats, Bikini Bottom, the sewers of New York City, and Arnold’s school. The game will be releasing on 23rd October on Switch, Xbox One, and PS4. [link]

A demo for PES 2019 comes out on 8th August on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. The demo includes exhibition match, quick match, and offline co-op across two stadiums (FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou and Schalke’s Veltins Arena) with 10 teams. New features this year include visible fatigue, which impacts performance and behaviour, as well as 4K HDR across all platforms (although I bet it isn’t true 4K on the PS4 Pro *throws shade*). Night Dive Studios, the developer behind HD updates to games like Turok and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, has announced the next game in their triumvirate of late 1990s first-person shooters; Forsaken. The remake is keeping the polygon count identical to the 20-year-old game but bumping the resolution and frame rate whilst including all the exclusive content from the N64 version. It launches tomorrow, 31st July, on PC and Xbox One. [link]

2D hack-and-slash platformer Salt and Sanctuary is coming to Switch on 2nd August. The porting process is being handled by Spanish dev BlitWorks which has previously worked on ports for Bastion, Spelunky, and Don’t Starve. [link]

Early Access Graduations

Space RPG Star Traders: Frontiers will be receiving a full Steam release on 1st August with updated builds for Windows, Mac, and Linux. To celebrate, the game is on offer with a 20% discount but will revert to its full price of $15 next week. [link]

After a delayed release at the beginning of last month, Flat Heroes will finally be leaving Early Access on 2nd August. John and I played this for a little while last year and found it to be an enjoyable local co-op experience. [link]

DLC and Updates

Rollercoaster Tycoon Touch (AKA “Rollercoaster Tycoon Don’t Touch With A Bargepole”) is getting a big update sometime next month that adds water parks and a new currency in the form of “Aqua Coins”. Sounds wonderful. [link]

The Darkside Detective received an update last week that added its ninth and final case to close out its first season. The case is named ‘Baits Motel’ and starts out with a visit to “Trout Of This World, a museum for oddities fished from Lake Monster”. I absolutely loved this game (read the review) and will definitely be giving this a play later in the week. [link]

Vampyr is getting a big update later this summer that is designed to de-emphasize combat and place “a greater focus on narrative”. Along with a number of optimisation tweaks, there will also be a hard mode for those that want more combat and for it to be more difficult. [link]

Leaks & Rumours

Microsoft is currently planning two different consoles: a traditional one which will just be a more powerful Xbox One X and an intriguing streaming console that will be powered by a new game-streaming platform with the current codename “Scarlett Cloud”. Both consoles are targeting a 2020 release date. [link]

Elgato have launched a smaller version of the Stream Deck titled the Stream Deck Mini. It is identical to the larger version but has 6 LCD buttons instead of 15. It’s 40% of the size but 71% of the price coming in at $100. [link]

HORI has announced three new GameCube style controllers for Nintendo Switch. The controllers are themed after Mario, Zelda, and Pikachu and are set for release in October. [link]

The new Steam chat client that Valve rolled into beta testing in June, with support for group chats, multiple channels, voice chat support, and inline multimedia, is now fully operational and live for everyone. Top tip: use the flags “-nochatui” and “-nofriendsui” to revert to the old system that doesn’t pop up on launch even if the app is minimised (and gives you easy options for going offline). [link]

Developer Turn 10 has announced that it will be removing Prize Crates - Forza Motorsport 7’s version of loot boxes - from the game this coming winter. Paid tokens will also not be coming to Forza Horizon 4. [link]

Rocket League, on the other hand, has published the odds of their loot boxes to maintain transparency and points out that the odds haven’t changed since loot crates were added back in September 2016. [link]

EA wants to take a leaf from Fortnite’s book and open up its “key franchises” to cross-platform play its vice president of investor relations Chris Evenden has said. You’ll probably need a word with Sony then… [link]
