Upcoming Games

A Kingdom Hearts virtual reality experience is coming to PlayStation VR later this year. It’ll be a free 10-minute interactive video featuring iconic moments from the Kingdom Hearts games with a soundtrack that unlocks the longer you “play”. [link]

Microsoft have released a demo of Forza Horizon 4 on both Windows 10 and Xbox One. I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet but it’ll be the first thing I do after this weekly update goes live! [link]

Bethesda has confirmed Wolfenstein III is happening and the Dishonored series isn’t finished. [link]

Democracy 4 has been announced and adds a number of new mechanics to the politics simulator including fake news and social media. It’ll arrive at some point next year with more details coming in the next few months. [link]

Lucas Pope, the developer behind Papers, Please, has released a new trailer for Return of the Obra Dinn, a game that sees you take on the role of an insurance adjustor investigating an abandoned ship. It should be arriving within the next couple of months. [link]

Re-Releases

The Professor Layton series is heading to iOS in the west starting with Professor Layton and the Curious Village. The announcement came from the App Store Twitter account and contains no information on a release date. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see it this week along with the iOS 12 update. [link]

Square Enix has announced that The Last Remnant is being remastered for the PS4 and will be out in December at a cost of $20. The game was recently removed from PC stores which is likely related. [link]

Slime Rancher has had a surprising physical release on console. [link]

Developer Digital Sun has announced that Moonlighter is coming to Switch in November. This is a game I definitely want to play and I think the Switch will be a great platform for it. [link]

Hollow Knight is releasing on Xbox One and PS4 on 25th September with all of the previous DLC packs included into one version of the game dubbed the “Voidheart Edition”. There will be retail releases in the new year along with the first paid piece of DLC. [link]

DLC and Updates

Spider-Man is getting a “New Game Plus” update at some point in the future. The revelation came from a reply to a tweet so there is no detail beyond “working on it now and polishing it up”. [link]

Rocket League’s “RocketID” cross platform match-up system has been delayed once again from September until a “future update”. A roadmap update is expected in October so no doubt we’ll hear more about an expected release date at that point. [link]

Forza Horizon 4 is getting some day-one DLC in the form of a James Bond car pack including such iconic vehicles as the Aston Marin DB5 and the Lotus Esprit S1. I’m disappointed there is no Aston Martin Vanquish or the BMW 750iL but I’ll be getting it purely for the 2CV. [link]

The 1.4 patch for Jurassic World Evolution has gone live and includes a huge list of changes and fixes, most notably a new challenge mode on Isla Nublar. I’ll be streaming it on Saturday night as I’ll need to get the 3 new achievements they’ve added… [link]

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has unveiled their post-launch roadmap and it includes two full story arcs and a fully remastered edition of Assassin’s Creed 3 and Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation for season pass owners. That is so tempting even I might grab a season pass… [link]

Nintendo Direct September

The rescheduled Nintendo Direct took place last week and had a ton of things to announce including:

  • Luigi’s Mansion 3 announced for Switch
  • Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (with a new chapter including Bowser Jr) are arriving on 3DS next year
  • Yoshi’s Crafted World is launching in spring 2019 on Switch
  • New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is following the pattern of nearly every other Nintendo produced Wii U game and arrives with New Super Luigi U included along with two new characters; Nabbit and Toadette (who can turn into… Peachette)
  • Cities: Skylines is available right now on Switch
  • Game Freak are working on a new Switch game titled Town which will launch at some point next year
  • Isabelle from Animal Crossing is coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate
  • Animal Crossing is getting a Switch game in 2019
  • Loads of board games are coming to Switch including Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Munchkin, and Pandemic
  • Several Final Fantasy games are coming to Switch: VII, IX, X, X-2, and XII. Sadly there is no VIII on the Switch :(

Leaks & Rumours

It looks like Halo 5: Guardians might come to PC with the box art on Amazon changing from “Xbox One Exclusive” to “Xbox One Console Exclusive”. [link]

Hardware

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti has been delayed by a week from 20th September to 27th September. Pre-orders may also be delayed with deliveries expected between those two dates. This doesn’t affect the RTX 2080 which is still expected to be available from 20th September. [link]

Pete Hines of Bethesda says he is “privy to some stuff” about the next generation of consoles but he obviously can’t share anything. I don’t know why I’m even linking to this but I guess it shows there are new consoles at a fairly advanced stage of development. [link]

Software

Nvidia has some new drivers (399.24) that provide some tweaks and extra performance for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout, and Assetto Corsa Competizione. The latest driver release also introduces Highlights support for Dying Light: Bad Blood and Ansel support for Insurgency Sandstorm. [link]

AMD has some new drivers (18.9.1) that add support for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Star Control: Origins whilst fixing a number of bugs. [link]

Nintendo has announced the Switch’s 6.0.0 system update will arrive alongside the Online Service activation tomorrow (18th September). [link]

Sony also has a 6.0.0 update for PS4 although it doesn’t seem to have added anything which is weird. [link]

Business

Insomniac’s Spider-Man has swung (lol) its way to the top of the UK sales charts. It’s also the fastest-selling game of the year in the UK beating Far Cry 5. I expect that will change with Red Dead Redemption 2 launching next month. [link]

The excitement of THQ Nordic purchasing the IP to Kingdoms of Amalur has been tempered by the news that EA still owns the publishing rights to the franchise making a remaster in the near future a little less likely. [link]

Politics

EA is willing to go to court in Belgium over its loot boxes in FIFA 18 and FIFA 19. [link]

Charity

Bethesda is supporting War Child UK to put on a live performance of its biggest musical hits. This includes tunes from Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Skyrim, and even upcoming game Fallout 76. [link]

Cool Shit

Thanks to Alexander “M210” Makarov’s RedneckGDX, you can now enjoy Redneck Rampage and its sequel at any resolution. It is highly likely this will make an appearance on my Throwback Thursday stream. [link]

The filmmakers behind the short adaptation of Papers, Please are working on a new film based on the Beholder game (which has very similar themes). [link]

The Cuphead soundtrack was played during the Kensington Market Jazz Festival in Toronto by the band that recorded it along with King Dice’s voice actress Alana Bridgewater. The whole thing is available to watch on YouTube. [link]
